THE OPPOSITION

Interactive Visual Performance

The Opposition is an interactive visual design project combining creative coding using Processing software and Leap Motion technology. This wall-mounted installation detects hand gestures, enabling users to intuitively build and eliminate elements within the artwork. Users interact with the installation through the palm and grab motions, as well as keyboard inputs (“1,” “2,” and “3”) in sequence to control the creation and elimination of each part of the arc. Additionally, the brackets (” [” and “]”) on the keyboard are used to adjust the brush size.

This Project draws inspiration from a 15th-century Eastern arc in Isfahan, renowned for its architectural elegance and adorned with Kufic script, a prominent typographic element in traditional Oriental buildings. The grid-like structure of the Kufic script directly influenced the grid-based design elements in this interactive artwork. The Opposition aims to foster a cultural connection through the dynamic interplay of modern technology and historical architecture, highlighting ancient structures’ universality and timeless narratives while showcasing the expressive power of contemporary design. This juxtaposition invites viewers to appreciate the rich heritage of Eastern architecture. It ultimately bridged the gap between these diverse architectural traditions. By engaging in this interactive performance, participants are encouraged to explore the significance of historical styles and the pivotal role of typography in architecture, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural and architectural heritage.
