REQUIEM FOR A WATERFALL

Interactive Visual Performance

As part of the Oasis project, Requiem for a Waterfall represents the result of consumer activities; nature is endangered due to pollution and environmental degradation; the production of greenhouse gases by factories and automobiles contributes to climate change, increasing temperatures, and ocean acidification. The use of plastics pollutes both land and water, breaking them down into microplastics that harm marine life. The runoff of chemicals from agriculture and industry contaminates water bodies, which poses a threat to biodiversity. These pollutants jeopardize ecosystems, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable practices and conservation efforts. In this project, the waterfall, a symbol of purity and life, is central to his narrative. However, its beauty overshadows the stark reality of environmental degradation. The imagery juxtaposes the waterfall’s natural splendor with the insidious impacts of industrial and consumerist practices, urging viewers to reflect on their role in this ongoing crisis. This project was created using Unreal Engine and became interactive by integrating Touch Designer for hardware support, Leap Motion. Inviting viewers to interact with the waterfall installation creates a tangible connection between humans and nature. This physical engagement that moves the waterfall in the X dimension symbolizes how our actions directly impact the environment, making environmental degradation more concrete and relatable.
